A cleaner future begins at port

Over 90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea, making maritime transport essential to the global economy. Shipping is an industry where even incremental change can deliver massive benefits.

On 1 January 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will enforce a new 0.5% global sulphur cap on fuel content, lowering it from the present 3.5% limit. Vessels operating outside the Emission Control Areas (ECAs), in global waters, will be required to use fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%. Those operating within the ECAs, in some very fragile ecosystems such as the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel, will continue to be required to use fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1%.
