Social sustainability is a growing area of focus for Neste which is working together with Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) to tackle social challenges. "In order to advance social sustainability, we need to improve our understanding of complex social issues particularly in Southeast Asia and BSR is helping us to do so," explains Simo Honkanen, Neste Senior Vice President, Sustainability and Public Affairs.

Neste's cooperation with BSR started in spring 2015 when a contract was signed concerning a labor rights study in Malaysia. BSR is a global nonprofit organization, with a network of more than 250 member companies, working to build a just and sustainable world. With offices in Asia, Europe, and North America, BSR develops sustainable business strategies and solutions through consulting, research, and cross-sector collaboration.

"Neste is committed to working towards solving problems within its supply chain. However, international labor migration issues, for example, are very complex and difficult. Therefore, we need to work with partners such as BSR to tackle these challenges," says Honkanen.

Working with a variety of actors, such as nonprofit organizations, is important for Neste in advancing sustainability. "Corporate-NGO partnerships enable us to do more than we could on our own and BSR was chosen because of their strong know-how," says Honkanen.
