Climate change is a global challenge, and responding to it calls for a number of parallel approaches. We participate in the global climate effort by producing cleaner transport fuels from renewable raw materials, as well as by controlling the emissions from our production.
Reduction in emissions of renewable products compensates for the emissions from production
The climate benefits from the renewable products we refine clearly exceed the emissions from our production of crude oil based products.
In 2016, our premium-quality renewable fuels, particularly Neste renewable diesel, helped our customers reduce greenhouse gas emissions – and simultaneously global climate emissions – by 6.7 million tons. This equals the annual emissions of 2.4 million passenger cars. Simultaneously, we managed to reduce our direct CO2 emissions resulting from our operations to 2.6 million tons
Our new target is to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 7 million tons with our renewable products in 2017. Increasing the share of waste and residues in production plays a key role in pursuing this objective.
Carbon footprint of products – close monitoring from end to end
We calculate the carbon footprint of our products over their entire life cycle, from the production of the raw materials they are refined from to their end-use. The use of our Neste Renewable Diesel helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50–90% compared to conventional crude oil based diesel. Read more about the carbon footprint of our products.
