We all benefit from biodiversity and ecosystems in various ways. We take the significance of ecosystems and biodiversity into account in everything we do, so we can protect them as extensively as possible. The best we can do for the environment is to make sure that our production processes are running as smoothly as possible, as emissions into the water, the air, and the soil are minimal during normal operations.
Systematic monitoring of the environment
Our refineries are located next to waterways and natural habitat across Finlands, therefore our environmental monitoring is particularly systematic at these refineries. Environmental monitoring is also included in the requirements of our refineries' environmental permits. We rectify any damage to the environment without delay. Our Finnish refineries continuously make impact assessments, finding out about the state of local habitats by investigating bioindicators such as lichens and mosses. According to the surveys, the state of the environment has improved considerably during the past decades in the vicinity of our refineries.
Preserved and protected areas in the vicinity of our refineries
Nature conservation areas or protected sites are located close to both of our refineries in Finland. The Stormossen bog – a 75-hectare domed bog – to the west of the Porvoo refinery is protected and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of nature conservation sites. The Vanto area of deciduous woodland close to the Naantali refinery, owned by Neste, is also a protected area by our request. We always take areas such as these into account in our operations and strive to protect them and the rest of the environment around said refineries. There are no areas of protected forestland in the vicinity of our refineries in Rotterdam or Singapore, which are located on industrial areas built on reclaimed ground.
Strong commitment to combat deforestation
We are committed to combating the deforestation of rainforests. Deforestation is a challenge in Southeast Asia in particular, where we source crude palm oil used as a raw material for our renewable products. To support our commitment, we have published guidelines concerning the prevention of deforestation and the sustainable sourcing of renewable raw materials. By the end of 2015, all our major palm oil suppliers were committed to No-Deforestation guidelines in their third-party sourcing.
We do continuous work to develop the sustainability of our palm oil supply chain and to prevent deforestation. Our partner in this area is CORE (The Consortium of Resource Experts). This association of Daemeter, Proforest, and the Rainforest Alliance supports us particularly in our continuous efforts to develop the traceability of our raw materials and transparency in supply chains.
We assessed the environmental risks of our company’s palm oil supply chain, and prepared an action plan for preventing and mitigating those risks. The implementation of the action plan began in the beginning of 2017.
