Climate change is a phenomenon that affects all of us. Traffic is one of the biggest sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Approximately one-fifth of the EU's carbon dioxide emissions are generated by traffic, and this figure is likely to increase.
To meet the goals relating to reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable energy in the EU, we believe that the traffic sector will also have to contribute towards a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

The most significant environmentally friendly, cost-efficient and easily available solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is our renewable diesel based on our proprietary technology. The use of Neste's renewable diesel made from 100% renewable raw materials can result in 40-90% lower greenhouse gas emissions when compared with conventional fossil diesel.
In 2016, renewable diesel produced by Neste reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 6.7 million tons.

Customers and products
We sell Neste's Renewable Diesel as a component of bio and diesel fuel to corporate customers, mainly in Europe and North America. Due to the high quality of the product, customers can use it in a flexible manner, optimize their logistics chain, and produce high-quality blended products. The product can also be sold to distributor companies as a readymade blend of fossil and renewable diesel. Due to its excellent cold weather characteristics, it is also suitable for aviation.
From renewable diesel to renewable plastics
Besides reducing carbon dioxide emissions from traffic, renewable fuels presents us with interesting opportunities outside of the traffic fuels segment. Renewable fuels can replace fossil fuels in the chemical industry's applications, such as the production of renewable solvents and renewable plastics. Renewable solvents are a more environmentally friendly option to use in the production of such products as paints, glues, detergents, and cosmetics. Neste's renewable isoalkane provides the means to decrease the environmental footprint of biochemical businesses and products, and an answer to consumer demand for high-quality sustainable solutions.
We have invested in a biopropane recovery unit at the Rotterdam plant and made preparations to start the production of biopropane during the first half of 2017. It can be utilized in the production of plastics and energy generation, among other uses.
