Towards the end of 2019, Neste and Mantsinen launched a Zero Exclusion initiativeto fight social exclusion. As a kickoff for the campaign, three young artists were asked to create paintings on the subject of hope and optimism using a Neste MY renewable diesel powered, 380 tonne Mantsinen 300 crane.
One of the companies that took part in the campaign was a global coating company Teknos. Paintings were painted with Teknos’ top-notch water-based paints, and some of the paintings were produced with a Neste MY Renewable Isoalkane based coating, which Teknos developed for the project.
“When we heard about Zero Exclusion, we wanted to do our part in helping young people. Zero Exclusion was very much in line with what we have done at Teknos before,” says Ulla Kotila, Global Marketing Manager at Teknos.
Kotila says that as a family business, Teknos emphasizes long-term thinking and the well-being of future generations. Indeed, future generations have been selected as one of the focus areas of the Teknos Corporate Responsibility Program. According to the Group's sustainability targets 2019-2025, Teknos aims to become the most responsible player in its industry, and, by doing their bit, leave a better world for posterity.
“Or, as our slogan says, to make the world last longer.”
In addition to caring for future generations and well-being, Teknos focuses on creating sustainable products and services as well as building a sustainable supply chain and production.
Teknos' strategy is to develop and market coating products that are both low-emission and safe. To this end, Teknos' R&D aims at creating products that save energy and extend the life span of buildings while reducing the amount of hazardous chemicals used.
“Being a forerunner in developing more sustainable solutions gives Teknos a competitive edge now and in the future.”
Water-borne products have already been widely incorporated into the company's product portfolios.
“Bio-based products and products made from secondary raw materials play a more significant role in the future.”
Teknos aims at replacing solvent-based products with high solids, powder coating and water-based products. This is easier said than done, Kotila notes.
“Solvent-based products have certain favourable properties that are difficult to achieve with water-based solutions. Developing something new and unique requires perseverance and confidence. In addition, partners are highly valued and needed."
In Zero Exclusion campaign Teknos was the first in the world to exhibit a coating based on Neste MY Renewable Isoalkane. According to Kotila, the new renewable coating is still being developed but is very promising.
“We have been researching the properties of Neste MY renewable isoalkane in the development of low-emission, renewable coatings. Preliminary testing shows that the new coating is even more durable than non-renewable solvent based products.”
According to Kotila, Zero Exclusion provided Teknos with a prominent platform to showcase what the company's products might look like in the future.
“Zero Exclusion has been a particularly amazing initiative because, just like when developing new products, it has been focused on close collaboration with good partners” Kotila concludes.
