Living sustainability: Auditing is an extensive operation

Article

Sustainability Specialist Jimmy Tan, based in Singapore, is responsible for auditing Neste Oil’s suppliers in the Asia-Pacific region. Given the size of the region, he travels extensively. Travelling to an up-country plantation can sometimes take hours, but he is not one to complain.

“I was a plantation manager for over 34 years, and it’s always a joy to be able to go back to the country and enjoy the serenity and the fresh air there.”

The sustainability of the production and supply chain is a critical factor, he says. “The most important thing is to select suppliers that comply with our criteria and that are willing to live up to them in their operations.”

Jimmy spends all his time on auditing work; that includes Neste Oil’s own audits and working closely with the third-party auditors responsible for carrying out the annual ISCC audits.

Everyone who changes the way they operate and adopts the methods approved by the ISCC and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) will reduce the impact they have on the environment, he believes.
