Our most efficient way to combat climate change is our Neste Renewable Diesel. Advanced biofuels made of renewable raw materials are a key means of increasing the share of renewable energy in traffic – both on the ground, in the air and at sea. In addition to traffic, we offer renewable solutions to other industries, such as the chemical industry.
In 2015, Neste Renewable Diesel made it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6.4 million tons. This corresponds to greenhouse gas emissions of 1.3 million cars annually.
Smaller carbon emissions and cleaner air in cities
Using Neste's Renewable Diesel results in 40–90% lower greenhouse gas emissions than fossil diesel. It also makes it possible to improve air quality in urban areas, as using it significantly reduces exhaust gas emissions compared to fossil fuels.
In addition to significant carbon reduction potential, Neste Renewable Diesel offers a cost-effective solution for reducing traffic-related local emissions and improving local air quality in cities:
- 33% lower levels of fine particulates (and a smaller number of particulates in general)
- 9% less nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- 24% lower carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and reduced levels of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
- 30% less hydrocarbons (HC)
Local emissions can, of course, be reduced effectively also by investing in a new fleet, for example, in vehicles with electric engines or the most modern diesel engines. However, if such investment is not an option and there is a need to reduce harmful emissions immediately, Neste Renewable Diesel offers a drop-in solution that the existing vehicles can use right away. The older and less developed the engines, the clearer the emission-cutting benefits from Neste Renewable Diesel are.
Neste Renewable Diesel offers our corporate customers a cost-efficient method for fulfilling the biomandates for the use of renewable energy. The product is compatible with existing distribution and logistics systems, and its use does not require additional investments. Neste Renewable Diesel is available to consumers in Finland and Lithuania in the form of Neste Pro Diesel. On the average, Neste Pro Diesel always contains approximately 15% renewable diesel.
Our renewable products have been tested in extensive field tests under a wide range of different conditions – cities, race tracks and extremely low temperatures.
Smaller carbon footprint also in air traffic
Neste produces renewable fuel also for the needs of air traffic. The significance of fuel quality is emphasized in air traffic, as aviation fuel must have high energy content and work in cold temperatures. Neste renewable aviation fuel meets the extremely strict requirements for safety and quality in aviation, and it has excellent cold weather characteristics not met by biodiesel or ethanol, for example. Lufthansa has tested the renewable aviation fuel in commercial flights, while Boeing has tested normal winter-quality road traffic Neste Renewable Diesel as a fuel component in test flights. The product has performed flawlessly in all tests.
