In which vehicles and engines can Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO100) be used?
As Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a similar chemical composition as fossil diesel, it can therefore be refuelled directly into any diesel vehicle, in any diesel engine. No modification to the engine is required. The properties and purity of Neste MY avoid extra motor maintenance.
How does Neste MY Renewable Diesel differ from fossil diesel?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel works at least as well as fossil diesel, but is made from renewable raw materials. The renewable diesel gives a lower emission of greenhouse gases compared to fossil diesel. Neste MY can be used and stored in the same way as fossil diesel.
Which standards does Neste MY meet?
Neste MY complies with the EN15940 standard for Paraffinic Diesel fuel.
Which vehicle manufacturers have approved Neste MY Renewable Diesel?
Major manufacturers of heavy vehicles such as Volvo Trucks, John Deere, Caterpillar, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, DAF and MAN have approved the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel. If your brand is not listed, please contact Neste.
How does Neste MY perform compared to other renewable fuels and fossil diesels?
The high cetane number) of Neste MY Renewable Diesel ensures efficient and clean combustion. Neste MY with its good cold properties is suitable for very cold weather conditions down to -22 degrees. In addition, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is free of sulphur, oxygen and aromatic compounds and can be stored for a long time without loss of quality.
Can you mix fossil diesel and Neste MY?
Yes. Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a high quality fuel with a similar chemical composition as fossil diesel. The diesel can therefore be refilled directly into any diesel engine, in any ratio. No investment in replacing cars or modifying engines is necessary.
Is Neste MY of higher quality than other HVOs?
Neste MY is an HVO in its purest form (HVO100). Compared to other HVOs, Neste MY has the most extensive raw material portfolio, excellent production stability and very good cold properties. HVO's come in all kinds of mixed forms, HVO20 for example consists of 20% HVO and 80% fossil diesel. With HVO100, of course, the sustainability benefits are the greatest. When HVO is mixed with diesel, the sustainability benefits reduce proportionally. For example, HVO100 provides a CO2e reduction of up to 90%, with HVO20 this is a fifth, or 18%.
Are renewable diesel like Neste MY and biodiesel the same kind of fuels?
No. Renewable diesel and biodiesel are two different fuels. Neste MY Renewable Diesel uses only renewable, organic raw materials, whose suppliers meet strict sustainability criteria. The processing of the raw materials differs. Neste MY is an HVO: vegetable oil is purified and treated with hydrogen at a high temperature. This gives renewable diesel a similar chemical composition as fossil diesel. Biodiesel is based on fatty acid methyl ester: FAME. Its quality is less high and less constant. Biodiesel also differs in composition from both fossil and renewable diesel. Thanks to its chemical composition, Neste MY Renewable Diesel does not require any additional investment in the vehicle fleet or additional maintenance. Biodiesel does, however, require engine modifications and/or increase servicing.
How does Neste MY reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to electric driving?
Neste MY immediately delivers a CO2e reduction of up to 90 percent compared to fossil diesel. The diesel can easily be refuelled in any diesel engine, in any ratio. No investment in replacing cars or modifying engines is required. The switch to electric driving, on the other hand, requires a substantial investment in time and money - and means the complete replacement of a vehicle fleet. UItgaande van productie van elektrische voertuigen in Nederland. When taking into account the well-to-wheel CO2e emissions*, Neste MY reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to electric driving, even when the electricity is produced in the Netherlands.
*The method used to calculate lifecycle emissions and emission reductions complies with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28 /EC).
Production and distribution
In which refineries is Neste MY Renewable Diesel produced?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel is produced in our refineries in Rotterdam, Porvoo (Finland) and Singapore. All Neste refineries that produce renewable products have International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) or are approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In addition, the refineries in Porvoo, Naantali, Rotterdam and Singapore have ISO 14001 environmental certification.
How much renewable diesel does Neste produce annually and how much can it contribute to the reduction of emissions?
Neste is the world's largest producer of renewable diesel. Every year we produce almost three million tons of renewable diesel. In 2019, Neste’s renewable products helped customers in several geographic markets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9.6 million tons* altogether. This amount equals the annual carbon footprint of 1.5 million average EU citizens (source: World Bank) or the removal of 3.5 million passenger cars from the roads for a full year.
Raw materials and sustainability
Why did Neste choose to introduce Neste MY Renewable Diesel in the Netherlands?
Because there is considerable demand in the Dutch market for climate-friendly transport solutions, and therefore for this product there is a great deal of demand.
The Netherlands currently has a significant problem with nitrogen. What impact could Neste MY Renewable Diesel have?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel could be part of the solution to improve air quality locally. Scientific studies and field trials have shown that the use of 100% Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a beneficial impact on local air quality:
9% less nitrogen oxides (NOx)
33% less particulate matter (and less dust in general)
30% less hydrocarbons (HC)
24% less carbon monoxide (CO) emissions
reduced quantities of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)
How does Neste monitor the carbon footprint* of Neste MY Renewable Diesel?
The carbon footprint of all our products is calculated over their entire life cycle, from production by refining the raw material to end use.
Neste MY Renewable Diesel has a significantly smaller carbon footprint than fossil diesel. Compared to fossil diesel, Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%.
The reduction in greenhouse gas emissions achieved through the use of Neste MY Renewable Diesel depends on the raw material with which it is produced. The largest reduction in emissions is achieved through the use of waste and residues.
*Carbon emissions from the use of renewable diesel are nil as the amount of biobased carbon dioxide released during combustion is equal to the amount previously absorbed by the renewable feedstock.
