Neste Oil records best-ever occupational safety performance

Neste Oil's occupational safety performance during 2009 was the company's best-ever. A total of 3.1 total recordable injuries occurred per million hours worked across the company, compared to 14.5 as recently as 2005. This level of performance puts Neste Oil among the best in Finnish industry in terms of safety and is also good from a wider European perspective.

Neste Oil's Porvoo refinery recorded 5.2 recordable injuries per million hours worked in 2009 and its Naantali refinery 2.3. The comparable figure for the NExBTL renewable diesel construction site in Singapore was 1.31, while that for the NExBTL plant under construction in Rotterdam was 2.77.

Neste Oil's performance is excellent compared to typical safety levels in the chemical industry. Companies in the Responsible Care program coordinated by the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland registered an average of 15.7  lost work day injuries per million hours worked in 2008. Corresponding statistics for Neste Oil in 2009 was 2,2.

"Neste Oil's position is that all incidents and injuries are preventable. I'm very happy that our systematic safety work has yielded such good results. All of our personnel receive safety training and safety behavior is always reviewed as part of plant observation tours made by supervisors and other staff. We also measure our safety performance very closely," says Simo Honkanen, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and HSSE.

Any failure in this area impacts not only employees involved but also our financial performance, either in the form of additional expenses or lost revenue."
