Neste Oil's second renewable diesel plant commissioned at Porvoo

Neste Oil has increased its capacity to produce NExBTL renewable diesel following the start-up of a second dedicated NExBTL plant at the company's main refinery at Porvoo. The new plant will be capable of producing 170,000 t/a of NExBTL renewable diesel. The start-up of the plant in June went well, and it has been producing the advanced fuel for a couple of weeks. The plant operates now on full capacity.

Neste Oil commissioned its first NExBTL plant - also at Porvoo and also with a capacity of 170,000 t/a - in summer 2007, and is building two world-scale plants, in Singapore and Rotterdam. Capable of producing 800,000 t/a each, these are due to be completed in 2010 and 2011.

"Our NExBTL renewable diesel is the world's cleanest and best diesel, and is very much in demand because of this," says Neste Oil's Deputy CEO Jarmo Honkamaa. "Our customers don't want to compromise on quality when it comes to meeting their bio content obligations. By replacing conventional diesel with NExBTL everyone can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions significantly and help improve urban air quality."

NExBTL renewable diesel

Neste Oil uses a proprietary technology to produce NExBTL renewable diesel fuel. This converts bio-based inputs into a fuel that resembles fossil diesel very closely in terms of its chemical composition. The process delivers a fuel with excellent technical specifications in areas such as startability and performance at low temperatures. The result is a better-quality product than current fossil diesel and one that is also aromatics- and sulfur-free. It is fully compatible with all diesel engines and all current fuel logistics and distribution systems.

Studies covering the entire life cycle of the product have shown that, when based on sustainably produced raw materials, NExBTL renewable diesel offers greenhouse gas emissions that are 40-80% lower than those of the best fossil diesel. Extensive field tests have also shown that using NExBTL reduces local emissions of particulates and NOx significantly as well compared to conventional diesel fuel. Neste Oil is committed to only using sustainably produced inputs in its NExBTL production and will use solely RSPO-certified palm oil by the end of 2015 or earlier if it is available in sufficient quantities.
