Neste's Pre-order the Future takes a peek into the future

The future can already be influenced by promoting the use of renewable materials and developing sustainable services for the everyday lives of people. Neste's Pre-order the Future project is at the forefront of this development.

What would you think about headphones controlled by brainwaves? Or a learning environment made alive with a hologram? All of this can be possible when Neste's Pre-order the future project is completed early next year.

Launched in April, Pre-order the Future is Neste's ambitious global project aiming to work with the public to find new and innovative methods of utilizing renewable materials in the production of goods and services.

The kind of future that futurologists talk about right now was studied for the project. The development of innovative future product and service concepts based on the use of renewable materials was launched using information compiled by Neste and partners' specialists.

Five concepts were chosen for implementation: the customized GreenPod workspace, EduCycle learning environment that comes alive, sustainable EcoTravel holiday package, CleanTrail application to promote greener mobile purchases, and mind-controlled ThinkEar headphones that adapt perfectly into the ear.

"We also invited the general public to think about and develop future concepts with us. The Pre-order the Future website allows people to vote for their favorite concepts and submit development ideas to take them further. We are open to all comments," says Sirpa Tuomi, Marketing Director at Neste.

"We want to raise responsible citizens"

Neste is a pioneer in premium-quality fuel produced using renewable feedstocks. With this project, Neste wants to challenge both itself and others to discuss and develop sustainable solutions for the future. The project strongly demonstrates how renewable materials and services based on them can be introduced to the everyday lives of people.

"Every one of us makes countless choices each day. That is why we can influence the future already now. We want to encourage people to make sustainable choices by creating them," Tuomi says.

Neste also wants to put pressure on other companies to develop renewable materials and their increasingly innovative use. That is why Neste wanted to engage the public in the project on a wide scale.

"Pre-order the Future is a long-term project, and we have reached pioneers the best at this stage. The American public has been particularly interested in the project. However, interest is also increasing elsewhere, as the project is becoming more and more concrete all the time," Tuomi says.

The American spoken word artist and YouTube sensation Prince Ea, who is engaged in continuous dialogue with his fans, has been of invaluable help in reaching out to the public. The first spoken word video showcasing the project reached an astonishing 65+ million viewers.
