Neste Oil to take part in Berlin’s International Green Week, 18-27 January

Neste Oil will take part in Berlin’s International Green Week between 18 and 27 January, where it will profile the company’s NExBTL renewable diesel and NExBTL renewable aviation fuel, together with the various renewable raw materials that it uses to produce these fuels.
This range of renewable raw materials is the broadest used in the biofuel industry today, as Neste Oil can currently produce renewable diesel from around 10 different types of vegetable oil and waste- and residue-based raw materials. Neste Oil is also involved in cutting-edge research on new-generation renewable feedstocks, and commissioned Europe’s first microbial oil pilot plant in fall 2012. This facility, at Neste Oil’s Porvoo site in Finland, is being used to research methods for producing microbial oil suitable for use as a renewable diesel raw material.
Numerous trials have shown that NExBTL renewable diesel reduces emissions
Numerous trials carried with German partners have shown that the NExBTL technology developed by Neste Oil is an excellent means for reducing both road- and air traffic-related emissions.
The emission reduction capability of NExBTL renewable diesel containing Diesel regenerativ fuel was demonstrated, for example, in a field trial carried out in Germany by Volkswagen, Audi, Neste Oil, OMV, the Coburg University of Applied Sciences, the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Public Health, the von Thünen Institute, and the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP) in 2010 and 2011. This trial, organized in Coburg and Munich, showed that diesel fuel produced from 100% renewable raw materials can significantly cut tailpipe emissions responsible for reducing air quality. A scientific study carried out as part of the project confirmed that use of this fuel can also result in 50% lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel. NExBTL renewable diesel has also shown how well it can perform in the 24-Hour Race at the Nürburgring circuit, one of the toughest races of its kind, in 2011 and 2012.
Neste Oil has carried out pioneering work with Lufthansa in the area of aviation biofuels. Neste Oil’s NExBTL renewable aviation fuel was used on a total of 1,187 flights between Frankfurt and Hamburg during a six-month trial in 2011. This unique biofuel trial came to an end in January 2012 with an intercontinental flight, flown as a regular scheduled service, between Frankfurt and Washington D.C.
