The Ham Trick sets another record – 185,000 Finnish households collected Christmas cooking waste fat for production of Neste MY Renewable Diesel
Neste Corporation, News, 25 February 2019
Finnish households once again enthusiastically rose to the challenge of contributing to the circular economy with the Ham Trick. This time around an impressive 185,000 households collected and recycled their Christmas cooking waste fat. Around 40,000 more households participated than in the previous year’s campaign.
Neste uses the waste fat to produce Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, which enables motorists to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90%. The amount of Neste MY Renewable Diesel made from last Christmas’ waste fat is enough to drive a car around the globe almost 18 times.
“The Ham Trick proves once again that Finns in all parts of the country are enthusiastic recyclers. Finnish technological expertise related to the circular economy is top-class, and a similar campaign could not be implemented on such a scale anywhere else. I want to thank all our partners and everyone who donated their Christmas waste fat and made this campaign their own. Circular economy is the way of the future”, says Lars Peter Lindfors, Senior Vice President, Technology at Neste.
The Ham Trick campaign donates EUR 20,000 to charity at the end of the campaign. These proceeds are donated to Hope ry, which provides disadvantaged families with financial support as well as for example secondhand clothing and hobby equipment.

The Ham Trick in brief
The Ham Trick is a cooperative project initiated by the Chemical Industry Federation, with the aim of familiarizing consumers with the principles of circular economy in a very concrete way. Consumers were asked to return the fat and oil left over from hams and other Christmas cooking to recycling points for use in producing Neste MY Renewable Diesel at Neste's refinery in Porvoo. The goal of the campaign was to get 300,000 Finnish households to participate.
The Ham Trick campaign is donating EUR 20,000 to the charity Hope, which helps low-income families. In addition to the Chemical Industry Federation, the other organizations behind the campaign are Neste, Lassila & Tikanoja, Honkajoki, Kesko Corporation, Finnish Packaging Recycling RINKI, Atria, HKScan, Snellman, the Rural Women’s Advisory Organisation, the federation of garbage disposal plants Kiertovoima KIVO and municipal garbage disposal plants, the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, the Finnish Water Utilities Association FIWA, and Finnish Environmental Industries YTP.
