Neste and Fazer Bakeries joined forces on May 2017, to convert doughnuts' waste frying oil into renewable diesel. The oil that Fazer Bakeries used for frying doughnuts for May Day was processed into Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The doughnuts' waste frying oil generated 1,200 liters of diesel, and an amount equal to the monetary value of the fuel was donated to SOS Children's Villages.

With their Doughnut Trick campaign, Fazer Bakeries and Neste wanted to remind Finns of the opportunities for recycling and the circular economy. A passenger car runs about 1 kilometer on the fuel generated by converting the frying oil of three doughnuts into renewable fuel.

"Through the Doughnut Trick, we wanted to illustrate how waste and residues can be reused to produce new products; high-quality Neste MY Renewable Diesel in this case," says Johan Lunabba, Director of Sustainability at Neste.

Fazer's waste fat is normally reused as a raw material by the asphalt and soap industries. For its part, Neste already uses all the waste fat of the meat industry and other industries in Finland to make renewable diesel.

"The circular economy may sound complicated, but campaigns like the Doughnut Trick can bring it closer to people's daily lives. It was also great that the proceeds were donated to a good cause," Lunabba adds.

"We were delighted by Neste and Fazer's initiative to do good in a new, innovative way. This combines corporate responsibility with social and environmental perspectives: the waste fat was refined into fuel, and the proceeds were used to create happy summer moments for children at SOS Children's Villages.  I hope we will see more initiatives of this type in the future," says Kei Heikkilä, Fundraising Manager at SOS Children's Villages.

Last Christmas, Neste cooperated with the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland and other partners in its highly successful Christmas ham campaign, which involved collecting ham roast fats for recycling into fuel.

In celebration of May Day, Finns were asked to vote for a charitable cause on social media. Most of the thousands of voters agreed that the proceeds should be used to donate sports equipment to SOS Children's Villages and to support its exercise activities. The second most popular option was art supplies.
