NEXBTL products can replace fossil-based raw materials in the chemical industry


Neste Oil’s NEXBTL product family offers the chemical industry a range of new opportunities for producing bio-based products.

“Our new NEXBTL renewable isoalkane opens up some exciting prospects for us in chemical industry applications,” says Tomi Nyman, who has overall responsibility for Neste Oil’s bio-based chemical industry products.

NEXBTL isoalkane is a light, bio-based oil that can be used by the chemical industry as a replacement for mineral oil in manufacturing products such as paints, lubricants, and functional liquids, such as heat transfer liquids and antifoaming agents.

“NEXBTL isoalkane is just the beginning for us in the chemical industry, as we are planning to follow it up with further products based on our NEXBTL technology that will extend the range of applications we can serve,” continues Nyman.

NEXBTL isoalkane, together with two other NEXBTL products intended for chemical industry needs – NEXBTL naphtha and NEXBTL propane – were showcased at the World Bio Markets fair in Amsterdam held between 4 and 6 March.

The NEXBTL product family has a lot to offer the chemical industry, Tomi Nyman believes.

“NEXBTL products can be used to either completely replace fossil-based raw materials or partially replace them; and manufacturers do not need to modify their processes to make the switch-over.” NEXBTL products can also be used to produce plastics such as renewable polyethylene and polypropylene using existing petrochemical processes.

Recycling is also straightforward, as renewable plastics can be recycled in the same way as conventional fossil-based plastics.

“The world’s major brands are very interested in renewable plastics at the moment. Plastics account for just a couple of percent of the cost of an end-product in some cases, which means that if renewable plastic is more expensive than a conventional polymer it will often not be a real cost factor in the price of the end-product. Renewable plastics also offer some major benefits in terms of the environment, as using them can result in a significant reduction in a product’s total life cycle CO2 emissions.”

Neste Oil is to begin producing NEXBTL isoalkane at its Rotterdam refinery, as part of the same process used there for producing NEXBTL renewable diesel.
