The Ham Trick is here again – recycling Christmas waste ham fat into Neste MY Renewable Diesel

Neste Corporation, News, 26 November 2019

The Ham Trick campaign (Kinkkutemppu in Finnish) will be executed once again to demonstrate circular economy in a concrete way. For the fourth year in a row in Finland, ham waste fat and other waste fats from Christmas dishes can be recycled for the production of Neste MY Renewable Diesel™. Last year, 185,000 Finnish households participated in the Ham Trick. The goal for this year is to increase the number of participants to 200,000.

“It is great that the Ham Trick now takes place for the fourth time in a row, showing how well the Finnish people have adopted circular economy thinking. The Ham Trick has become a part of the Christmas traditions for many Finnish households. It also demonstrates the power of cooperation which is needed in making circular economy work,” says Lars Peter Lindfors, Senior Vice President, Innovation at Neste.

Neste will use the collected Christmas ham waste fat at the Porvoo refinery to make Neste MY Renewable Diesel. It enables motorists to decrease their carbon footprint by up to 90%, compared to the use of fossil diesel. Over 100,000 kilograms of used cooking waste fat has been recycled through the Ham Trick campaigns during the past three Christmas seasons. The renewable diesel produced from this amount is enough to drive about 36 times around the globe.

Participation is easy – there are 218 collection points located all around Finland

Neste can produce Neste MY Renewable Diesel and other renewable products from almost any waste fat or vegetable oil. Therefore in addition to ham waste fat, also other waste fats used in cooking Christmas dishes can be delivered to the collection points.

The waste fats can easily be delivered to the collection points in cardboard boxes, for instance in empty milk cartons. Glass or metal jars are not suitable for the collection. The collection points will be open from 21 December 2019 to 7 January 2020. Collection points can be found all around Finland, for instance, at selected Neste service stations, K Group shops and the recycling areas of municipal waste disposal companies.

The Ham Trick Campaign wants to remember Hope Association and support low-income families with a donation. At Christmas time, the gifts given by the Hope Association will be in great need.

Collection dates, collection points and more information about the campaign can be found at www.kinkkutemppu.com (in Finnish).

Ham Trick in brief

The Ham Trick is a cooperative project initiated by the Chemical Industry Federation, with the aim of familiarizing consumers with the principles of circular economy in a very concrete way. Consumers participate in the campaign by bringing their ham fat to collection points, from where it is then taken to Neste Finland Refinery, Porvoo for using into renewable diesel. The goal of the campaign is to get 200,000 Finnish households to participate. In addition to the Chemical Industry Federation, the other organizations behind the campaign are Neste, Lassila & Tikanoja, Honkajoki, Kesko Corporation, Finnish Packaging Recycling RINKI, Atria, HKScan, Snellman, the Rural Women’s Advisory Organisation, the federation of garbage disposal plants Kiertovoima KIVO and municipal garbage disposal plants, the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, the Finnish Water Utilities Association FIWA and Finnish Environmental Industries YTP.
