Neste opens Finland’s first low-emission service station in the Tuusula Housing Fair 2020 area. Climate-friendly solutions have been used in the construction, operations and product range of the station.
Neste Express Tuusula Rykmentinpuisto opens already before the summer housing fair, on Thursday 9 July 2020, at Puistometsäntie 1, Tuusula. The station features a Neste Easy Deli self-service store, OmaPosti kiosk, Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ and fast charging for electric vehicles. In early autumn, biogas and natural gas filling points will also be opened at the station.
“At Neste’s future service station, motorists can significantly reduce their carbon footprint with Neste MY Renewable Diesel. In addition, it is great that our station also offers climate-friendly alternatives for electric and gas car owners. The combined use of renewable diesel, biogas and electricity will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% per year compared to average refueling products,” says Katri Taskinen, Vice President for station network in Finland, Marketing & Services, Neste.
Leppäkosken Energia and Unified Chargers are delivering Finland’s first intelligent fast charging field for charging up to four electric vehicles at the same time.
“It is a smart solution where the total power of the field is split between the cars being charged. When the battery of one car is full, the released charging power is automatically transferred to the remaining chargers. The customer only needs a debit card and can charge the electric vehicle,” says Juha Koskela, Sales Director, Leppäkosken Energia Oy.
The first gas filling station in Tuusula will also be opened at Neste’s service station, offering both biogas and natural gas for passenger cars and delivery vehicles.
“We make it possible to fill up with fully renewable and Finnish biogas at Rykmentinpuisto. This is our company’s first gas filling station, and it is great to present it as part of Neste’s service station of the future,” says Mika Paloranta, Managing Director, Suomen Kaasuenergia Oy.
Emissions from the service station of the future real estate are more than 70% lower
Several low-emission solutions have been developed in building the Rykmentinpuisto station**. Cross-laminated timber elements have been used in the construction of the Easy Deli and fueling station. Crushed rock has been partially replaced with crushed concrete and rubber granules have been used in the asphalt. Later this autumn Neste will also open a gasoline filling point to the station, where the fuel reservoir is located above the ground, thus avoiding excavation and quarrying work that are a burden on the environment.
The energy used by the station comes from solar panels installed on the Easy Deli roof, as well as electricity generated by wind power and hydroelectric power.
“The idea originated from the competition organized by the municipality of Tuusula and the Housing Fair in the summer of 2019. With the help of the Tuusula pilot station, we can test responsible construction and new services in cooperation with our partners. Thanks to the construction and maintenance solutions, the emissions from the station real estate are more than 70%* lower than the emissions of a conventional station over the entire life cycle. In addition, the location of the station is excellent, so as many people as possible can try out the services and give us feedback,” Taskinen continues.
Self-service enables faster shopping and growth of e-commerce
Easy Deli self-service store utilizes RFID technology that scans all purchases at once, for example through a shopping bag. The store serves customers around the clock seven days a week. A similar Easy Deli self-service store opened in central Helsinki at the beginning of June 2020.
The future service station will also include a Posti OmaPosti kiosk, where packages and registered letters can be collected, returned and sent to Finland and abroad daily. The service point complements South Tuusula’s postal services, bringing online purchases close to residents of the area and others passing through. Personal video chat support is also available when necessary.
“The growth in e-commerce and parcel volumes has been enormous during the past spring. To support the growth, we need to offer our customers flexible service options close to their everyday routes. This will also reduce emissions from deliveries. The arrival of online purchases can be easily tracked using the OmaPosti application,” says Heiko Laubach, Head of Retail Network at Posti.
As part of the development of emission-free e-commerce logistics, Posti announced in June 2020 that it will start using Neste MY Renewable Diesel in its light delivery fleet.

*) Ramboll has calculated the buildings and infrastructure of the Rykmentinpuisto fuel station as well as the carbon footprint and handprint of refueling products. The total station is 31% lower in emissions than a fuel station built using conventional construction methods and selling average filling products, taking into account the climate impact of the fuel station real estate and transport energy products sold there. Emissions from the fuel station’s real estate are 73% lower than for a conventional station over the entire life cycle of the station. The emissions reductions over the period of use are 83% lower, and construction emissions are 24% lower. For products, 82% do not take into account fossil-based gasoline. If gasoline is included in the calculations, the annual emissions reduction is 24%. Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces motorists’ own greenhouse gas emissions over the life cycle by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. The methodology for calculating life cycle emissions and emissions reduction of Neste MY Renewable Diesel is in line with the European Union’s renewable energy directive (2009/28/EC).
