Sustainability in action: Neste Oil promotes better summer jobs

Neste Oil has promoted the summer employment of young people by providing about 240 summer interns with a summer job in 2011. Most of the summer employees were based in the refinery areas of Porvoo and Naantali, and the rest at the Espoo headquarters and the company's smaller locations

Neste Oil was involved in summer job efforts through the "Vastuullinen kesäduuni 2011" (responsible summer jobs 2011) campaign that aims to challenge employers to provide young people with more summer jobs that are also better. The campaign was run by Alma Media and the Finnish Children and Youth Foundation.

The companies involved in the campaign are committed to abiding by the principles of good summer jobs: providing sensible work, reasonable pay and induction, treating the employees fairly and justly, and having written employment contracts and certificates.

Offering good, responsible summer jobs is a benefit to young people and employers. For young people, a summer job is an opportunity to obtain work experience and a more detailed idea of working life and future career plans. In addition to valuable work input from summer employees, companies also receive information on the values and attitudes of the future generation of employees. A survey study was conducted in summer 2011 among the summer employees of the companies included in the campaign. The goal of the study was to find out what the young people think and expect of summer jobs.
