Energy efficiency
As part of our strategy we aim to reach carbon neutral production by 2035. Among several other actions, this requires efficient and reliable monitoring to ensure that we use all resources, like energy and water, as efficiently as possible.
Energy efficiency plays a key role particularly in our production and logistics. We for example, consider energy efficiency when overhauling and replacing equipment and making new investments. We continuously seek new ways to improve energy efficiency by modifying our operating methods.
As part of our commitment to reach carbon neutrality in production by 2035, we aim for 100% renewable electricity use globally by 2023. In order to proceed with this target, we have agreed on wind power deliveries with Statkraft, Ilmatar and Fortum, and a hydropower agreement with Vattenfall. We reached our target of 100% renewable electricity in Porvoo, Finland in January 2022. Read more.
Commitment to energy efficiency
We have made a commitment to the efficiency program for Finland’s energy-intensive industries. During the agreement period in 2017–2025, we aim to save 500 GWh from the 2014 level. In 2022, our energy saving measures were 42.6 GWh.
We for example, have a new long-term agreement on wind power with Fortum. The total capacity of the agreement is more than 60 MW, and the energy produced will correspond to around 20% of the electricity consumption at the Neste Porvoo and Naantali sites. The wind power deliveries began in 2021. The shift to wind power will reduce the indirect greenhouse gas emissions of electricity purchases at Neste’s production sites annually by approximately 40 kilotons.
