Focus on waste

Neste focuses on efficient utilization of raw materials from waste and residue streams to reduce climate emissions and accelerate circularity of materials. 

Neste produces its renewable products, including raw material for bio-based plastics, primarily from waste and residue fats and oils; they account for nearly 80% of Neste’s renewable raw material usage. Plastics produced from Neste’s renewable hydrocarbons are suitable for reuse and recycling.

Neste also explores ways to introduce liquefied plastic waste as a future raw material for traditional fossil refining and for petrochemical processes. This supports global efforts to reduce plastic waste, and provides the means to reduce crude oil dependency in the production of fuels, chemicals, and new plastics. 

Drop-in alternatives for high-quality end products

Selecting Neste as a plastics partner ensures that there is no need to compromise on product safety, processing efficiency or recyclability. 

The production technologies and processes employed by Neste ensure that even when low-quality waste-based raw materials are used, the end products are of very high quality, meeting or exceeding those of fossil-based materials.

Bio-based plastics produced from Neste’s renewable hydrocarbons but also plastics produced from liquefied plastic waste are of comparable quality to plastics made from virgin fossil raw materials. There are no limitations to their applications. As they are free of impurities, they are suitable even for food and medical packaging.

Climate & ecological benefits

Replacing conventional plastics with Neste’s bio-based plastics and plastics from chemically-recycled plastic waste enables the plastics industry and various plastics-consuming companies and brands to reduce their crude oil dependency and climate emissions. 

Replacing crude oil with renewable or recycled raw materials in plastics production reduces the carbon footprint of the items made from these materials.

The plastics based on Neste’s bio-based or recycled raw materials are reusable and eventually also easily recyclable both mechanically and chemically. This supports, even accelerates, circularity of plastics in society. It also helps tackle the global plastics waste challenge.

By providing plastics waste a high-value outlet, a new life cycle, Neste helps reduce the need to direct these material streams to landfills and incineration, while it also helps prevent littering of the environment. 

When eventually incinerated at the end of their life cycle, plastics with bio-based content help reduce negative impact of incineration to climate change by releasing and circulating renewable carbon to the atmosphere, not adding “new” carbon from fossil sources.
