A full-scale pilot project – Yara’s diesel vehicles in Norrköping run on Neste MY Renewable Diesel™

Loading and unloading 300,000 tons per year – using renewable diesel as fuel.

Yara is the leading producer of crop nutrients in Sweden. As part of its efforts to address operational transport emissions, the company is testing Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ (HVO) at one of its three terminals. This is a full-scale operational test: all vehicles at the facility run on renewable diesel while handling approximately 300,000 tons of crop nutrients annually.

We spoke with Cai Bäreklev, Terminal Manager at Yara’s Norrköping terminal.

Cai, what was your rationale when transitioning to Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ at the Norrköping terminal in Sweden?

Cai explains: “When I started here two years ago, we began evaluating lower-emission fuel options immediately. Fleet operations and transportation represent a significant share of operational environmental impacts. Because our facility operates under environmental permit requirements, evaluating renewable fuel alternatives was a natural step for us.”

So reviewing your fuel choice was a logical next step?

“Yes, absolutely. Transport operations generate greenhouse gas emissions, so switching to a lower-GHG-emission alternative* was an obvious focus area. In addition, using a drop-in renewable diesel required no modifications to our existing vehicles or equipment.”

So it performs like conventional diesel, but serves as a lower-GHG-emission alternative?

“Yes, exactly. It functions as a seamless drop-in replacement in our existing engines, while offering lower life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil diesel.*”

How did you manage the refueling setup?

Cai shares: “We installed a modern dedicated fuel storage tank. We had a tank previously, but we chose to upgrade our infrastructure when transitioning to renewable diesel. The switch to HVO was completely smooth and frictionless—we simply refueled with the new fuel from one day to the next.”

You mentioned earlier that this is a pilot project within Yara. Tell us more!

“Yes, we operate three terminals in Sweden: Landskrona, Åhus, and Norrköping. The intention is to expand the transition to renewable diesel to the other terminals if this pilot yields positive operational results. Performance has been very positive so far.”
