Neste’s Board of Directors approves policies covering sustainability, and monitors the company’s performance. Neste Executive Committee is responsible for outlining the company’s strategic approach to sustainability and monitoring how sustainability is reflected in the business unit and common function operations.
In 2019, we established an external independent Advisory Council on Sustainability and New Markets. The Council consists of a group of carefully selected experts able to provide strategic insight, guidance and assistance. They are committed to helping accelerate Neste’s transformation and extend its leadership activities.
Sustainability work is the enabler of our business strategy. Sustainability targets are an integral part of the business area objectives that require sharing of competence and cooperation across organizational lines.
Our business units are supported by our Sustainability organization, as well as Human Resources and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) organizations. These share the responsibility of managing Neste’s sustainability efforts.
Our global sustainability commitments
With our renewable and circular low-emission solutions, we contribute to the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
These six SDGs have the greatest impact from our perspective:
- SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth
- SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13 Climate Action
- SDG 17 Partnerships
These SDGs have been prioritized and chosen based on our materiality analysis, impact evaluation study, an external review as well as internal expert analysis. We are working with the company-specific targets in order to respond to the global challenges addressed by the SDGs.
We are also committed to supporting the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) reporting and are a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
Neste is a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) initiative, whose ten universal principles are based on fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Neste Annual Report is compliant with the UNGC reporting requirements and along with the Communication on Progress shows how we implement the ten principles and support broader UN goals.
