Redefining the future of plastics

Neste has developed a concept Neste bioplastics solution to produce bio-based plastics that are of comparable quality to plastics made from virgin fossil raw materials.

Bio-based plastics produced from Neste's renewable hydrocarbons are fully compatible with existing production and recycling infrastructures and a “drop-in” alternative to conventional plastics in all applications requiring reusable and recyclable high-quality plastics.

Consumers will be able to use the plastic items and packages just as they are used to, with high comfort - and eventually recycle with a good conscience knowing that their use of plastics has not accelerated climate change.

Plastics are everywhere

The demand for plastics is expected to grow four-fold by 2050 as they offer a multitude of solutions to improve the quality of living for the fast increasing global population.

Plastic items need to be produced and designed in such a way that the natural resource and energy consumption is minimized and efficient recycling is enabled. It is the environmental footprint that counts.

Bioplastics help reduce climate emissions

The renewable plastics or renewable polymers offer clear reductions in global warming potential due to their renewable origin. This is true even for single-use applications such as packaging. They can be recycled, and when at the end of their life cycle, directed to incineration and turned into renewable energy when they no longer can be used elsewhere.

When incinerated at the end of their life cycle, plastics with bio-content help reduce negative impact of incineration to climate change by releasing and circulating renewable carbon to the atmosphere, not adding new carbon from fossil sources.

Numerous applications waiting to happen

The new drop-in bioplastics can be produced via conventional routes, through the steam cracking of renewable hydrocarbons, produced using the Neste's proprietary NEXBTL technology. The applications for such bio-based polymers are endless, and practically any polymer could be made from such renewable material. 

Bioplastics produced from Neste's renewable hydrocarbons can be used to make among others, parts for cars, packaging, consumer goods and electronics, to name a few.

Plastics production has grown 20-fold between years 1964 and 2014, and it is expected to double again over the next 20 years. By 2050, the plastics sector will account for 20% of total oil consumption and 15% of the global annual carbon budget.

If actions are not taken, it is expected that by 2050 there will be more plastics than fish in the ocean by weight. “The New Plastics Economy, Rethinking the Future of Plastics”, a report by Ellen MacArthur Foundation covers an after-use plastics economy that could be achieved with a new approach.
