Which vehicles and engines can use Neste MY Renewable Diesel?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel is chemically similar to fossil diesel fuel and meets the same ASTM D975 specification as fossil diesel, as well as the European EN 15940 fuel standard .
This means it is a ‘drop-in’ fuel – ready to be poured into any diesel engine without modifications. Use Neste MY neat (R99) or blended with any ratio of fossil diesel.
What are the differences between Neste MY Renewable Diesel and fossil diesel?
Fossil diesel comes from non-renewable resources such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
At Neste, we use over 10 different, sustainably-produced raw materials – such as waste and residues – to create Neste MY.
The mix of raw materials differs across locations, but thanks to our patented NEXBTL process, the end product is always the same: a R99 fuel, the purest form of HVO.
Because our raw materials are 100% renewable, Neste MY involves no drilling for the crude oil used to create fossil diesel.
Unlike biofuels that use materials straight from crops, Neste MY also does not contribute to deforestation.
What quality standards does Neste MY Renewable Diesel meet?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel meets the ASTM D975 specification for fossil diesel.
It has also been awarded both TOP TIER™ and EN 15940 certifications, which assesses fuels in line with strict emission limit values, particulate filter life, long-term engine durability and engine performance.
The Worldwide Fuel Charter (WWFC) also points to renewable diesel’s high cetane number as a reason to recommend its use over other biofuels, including traditional FAME biodiesel.
What is TOP TIER™ diesel fuel?
The TOP TIER™ Diesel Fuel standard is awarded to diesel fuel suppliers with formulas that have been tested and approved by a select consortium of automotive OEMs.
These tests certify that Neste MY Renewable Diesel meets higher standards of performance, including:
Reduced internal and external fuel injector deposits
Improved lubricity leading to less wear on critical fuel system components
Better fuel stability which reduces deposits in fuel systems’ components
Increased protection against water and particulates before transfer to tank
Which engine manufacturers recommend Neste MY Renewable Diesel?
We work hand-in-hand with OEMs to test and approve the development, production, and delivery of Neste MY Renewable Diesel around the world.
Most leading transportation manufacturers have already approved R99 for their engines. This means pioneers in heavy transport, construction machinery, and passenger cars have all approved the use of Neste MY.
OEMs that approve Neste MY Renewable Diesel include Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar, Volvo Trucks, Paccar, Mack, John Deere, Mercedes Trucks, Scania, DAF, Komatsu, and Liebherr.
How well does Neste MY perform compared to other renewable fuels?
Neste MY Renewable Diesel’s premium quality makes it a more flexible, convenient, and higher performance fuel than traditional biodiesel products.
Neste MY can be used in any diesel engine, with any ratio of fossil diesel. Most other biofuels can only be used in a low blend of up to 7%**.
With proper handling, Neste MY can also be stored for a long period, compared to biofuels’ average six-month shelf life.
Can you switch between Neste MY Renewable Diesel and fossil diesel, and mix them in the tank?
Yes. Neste MY Renewable Diesel can be used without any modifications to your fleet. Use it neat (R99) or blended with any ratio with fossil diesel.
What makes Neste MY better than other renewable diesels?
We have stringent and transparent quality control processes that guarantee the integrity of our entire supply chain.
Neste MY Renewable Diesel will always be high-quality: a fuel our specialists have monitored from raw material, during production, and across our network of distribution partners.
In turn, leading engine manufacturers have tested and approved Neste MY’s formula to deliver premium quality.
Wherever and whenever you refuel with Neste MY, your journey will be powered by a fuel with consistent purity and performance.
Are renewable diesel and biodiesel the same product?
No. Both Neste MY Renewable Diesel and biodiesel are made from 100% renewable raw materials. However, Neste MY is a pure Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100).
This means it is a hydrocarbon diesel that is chemically very similar to fossil diesel (it meets the same ASTM D975 standard). It can be used with any diesel engine without any modifications – either neat (R99), or blended with any ratio of fossil diesel.
It does not attract water. With proper handling, you can store it for longer periods without risk of deterioration or microbial growth. Its high cetane number helps it start up more smoothly.
Conversely, biodiesel is a Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) product and NOT a hydrocarbon. It has a higher cloud point, and therefore struggles in temperatures below 34°F.
Susceptible to microbial growth and aging, biodiesel has a shelf life of just six months. Plus, most OEMs recommend using no more than 7%** in a blend with HVO or fossil diesel.
