Reduce the use of virgin fossil in your plastics with Neste RE

Neste RE™ is a global, drop-in feedstock, produced from renewable or recycled raw materials to be used as a replacement for conventional fossil raw materials in the production of plastics and chemicals.

Fossil resources leave an undeniable carbon footprint on the production of plastics. With the plastics sector projected to account for nearly a fifth of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040*, the industry must shift.

Reduces GHG emissions by up to 85%*

Neste RE™ made from renewable raw materials delivers over 85%** GHG emission reduction when comparing it to its equivalent fossil-based product.

Made from renewable raw materials

When made from recycled raw materials, Neste RE™ reduces virgin fossil resource consumption by over 70%*** (fossil abiotic depletion).

Neste RE™ is a global, drop-in feedstock produced from renewable and recycled raw materials. It allows the petrochemical industry and brand owners for any plastic application to effortlessly work towards their climate targets – without changing their existing manufacturing infrastructure, production processes, or final product quality.

What are the benefits of Neste RE?

  • Helps reduce fossil resource dependency, the carbon footprint of plastics and chemicals and Scope 3 emissions

  • Drop-in solution - doesn’t require changes to production infrastructure

  • Matches virgin fossil product properties

  • Available at scale worldwide

Applications across industries

Neste RE provides a high performing drop-in solution that meets strict technical performance, safety and hygiene standards across a wide range of industries, from food packaging and medical applications to automotive, electronics and construction.

Food & Beverage

Meets food-contact material and safety standards. Neste RE is already used to produce coffee capsules, plastic wrapping, food packaging and bottles.

Automotive

Already used in the production of lightweight interior trims and dashboards, as well as headlamps and grilles by car manufacturers.

Electronics

Materials produced from Neste RE provides electronic device components with performance properties equivalent to conventional fossil raw materials, including flame resistance and optical properties for high-end devices.

Construction

Enables construction materials, like insulation or piping, to have a reduced impact on the environment while maintaining the same specification requirements.

Toys

Neste RE meets the highest safety and quality standards required by regulations as with conventional virgin crude oil products.

Neste RE raw materials

The raw materials used to produce Neste RE are fully ISCC certified and traceable. Instead of relying on virgin fossil resources, we use bio-based renewable raw materials, such as waste and residues like used cooking oil, and recycled materials, i.e. liquefied waste plastic derived from challenging waste plastic streams that include multi-layer packaging, mixed plastic waste, and contaminated plastics.

Change the raw materials, not the product

Materials based on Neste RE are of identical quality to those made from virgin fossil feedstocks and can be turned into exactly the same products and used for the same applications. The recyclability of plastics made with Neste RE remains unchanged.

Sony unveils new earbuds and TVs powered by renewable Neste RE™

Partnering with Neste, Mitsubishi Corporation and 11 other global companies, Sony is partly replacing virgin fossil-based plastics with renewable alternatives, proving that high-quality consumer electronics can have a lower carbon footprint.
