Neste's proprietary NEXBTL technology enables the use of almost any waste fat or vegetable oil in the production of Neste MY Renewable Diesel and other renewable products. We are constantly looking into expanding our portfolio with new renewable raw materials. Replacing fossil oil with renewable and recycled raw materials helps reduce crude oil dependency, greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.
In recent years, we have focused primarily on increasing the use of waste and residues as raw material. They account for approximately 80% of our annual renewable raw material usage.
More than 10 different renewable raw materials in our portfolio
We use approximately 10 different sustainably-produced raw materials to produce our renewable products each year. An extensive raw material portfolio provides flexibility, as it allows us to respond to the needs of different markets and customers.
Our renewable products are always of premium quality, regardless of the raw materials we use in their production.
We accept only sustainably-produced raw materials from carefully selected suppliers. No matter which raw materials from our extensive portfolio are used, our renewable products enable significant greenhouse gas emission reductions over their life cycle when replacing the use of fossil alternatives.
For example, Neste MY Renewable Diesel produced from any of our renewable raw materials offers 50–90% smaller greenhouse gas emissions over the fuel’s life cycle compared to emissions from fossil diesel use. The smallest carbon footprint, and an emission reduction of 85 to 90% compared to fossil diesel, is achieved when fuel produced 100% from wastes and residues is used.
Waste and residues in Neste's raw material portfolio:
- animal fat from food industry waste
- fish fat from fish processing waste
- vegetable oil processing waste and residues (e.g., palm fatty acid distillate, spent bleaching earth oil)
- used cooking oil
- technical corn oil (a residue from ethanol production)
Vegetable oils in Neste's raw material portfolio:
- palm oil
- rapeseed oil
- soybean oil
- jatropha oil
- camelina oil
All our refineries producing renewables are technically capable of running on 100% waste and residue raw materials. We reached this capability already in 2015.
