Questions and answers about Neste and renewable plastics

  1. Why is Neste involved in producing plastics? 
    We are highly motivated to do good in society. With regards to renewables, we have the technology and know-how to leverage our positive impact from fuels and transportation sector to other areas of life. We have been developing renewable and circular solutions for over a decade; today we can help also the polymers and chemicals industries to reduce their crude oil dependence and carbon footprint. 

    Together with a network of partners, are helping polymers and chemicals sectors replace fossil materials with renewables. We are also developing ways to keep plastics circulating in society to reduce the need to tap into new fossil reserves.
     

  2. Is Neste a plastics producer?
    Neste has developed a concept for producing virgin-grade quality plastics from Neste’s 100% renewable hydrocarbons. Collaboration with several value chain partners, such as plastics producing companies, is key in this concept. Together with our partners, we are able to provide renewable plastics to sustainable brand owners wishing to add bio-based content to their offering.

    We are also exploring chemical recycling as a means to increase plastics recycling rate and to be able to use liquefied waste plastics as a raw material. This raw material can be used as a replacement to crude oil in the production of plastics, chemicals and fuels.
     

  3. What raw materials does Neste use in renewable plastics?
    Neste produces 100% renewable hydrocarbons to be used as raw material in the production of bio-based plastics. These renewable hydrocarbons are produced from waste and residue oils and fats and sustainably-produced vegetable oils.

    We are also exploring ways to use liquefied waste plastics as raw material. Currently the material is primarily fossil-based, not renewable, but can eventually help replace virgin fossil raw materials in the production of plastics, chemicals and fuels, while also making possible to recycle plastics more efficiently than what is currently possible with mechanical recycling.
     

  4. Do Neste and its partners produce bio-based plastics with 100% biocontent?
    So far, Neste and its partners have used Neste’s 100% renewable hydrocarbons together with fossil raw materials to produce plastics. An independent third party tested the polymer products produced using carbon tracers and confirmed they contained over 30% renewable content.

    Neste’s 100% renewable hydrocarbons are a drop-in replacement option to fossil raw materials and they can be used in polymers production without any limitations as they perform in the production process just like fossil raw materials. Our renewable hydrocarbons could, therefore, be used to produce plastics with even 100% renewable content. The more fossil content is replaced with renewables, the better for our planet. 
     

  5. Does Neste produce biodegradable bio-based plastics with its partners?
    At the moment, Neste does not produce biodegradable bio-based plastics with its partners. Instead of plastics with compostable characteristics Neste has been focusing on recyclable and reusable bio-based plastics. Recyclability of materials is important to us and our partners.
     
  6. Where can bio-based plastics be used?
    Bio-based plastics derived from Neste’s 100% renewable hydrocarbons can be used to replace fossil materials in a wide variety of products including parts for cars, packaging, consumer goods, such as toys, and electronics, to name a few. In these applications, for example, biodegradability would not be a desired feature but recyclability is highly valued.
