Neste's role in sustainable aviation

Aviation is a fast growing industry, and as global air traffic is expected to double over the next 15 years, so will the aviation-related emissions, if no action is taken. The industry has already taken steps in the right direction, by committing to the target of achieving carbon neutral growth from 2020 onwards. While many solutions, such as electrified aviation, are still in early stages of development, the industry need solutions to cut the direct carbon emissions of flying. 

Neste is committed to helping the aviation industry with its emission reduction targets. This is why Neste has developed a drop-in solution that is readily available and already in commercial use. Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel™, is a sustainable aviation fuel that reduces GHG emissions up to 80% compared to fossil jet fuel. The fuel provides an immediate solution for reducing the direct carbon emissions of flying and thus helps the industry to achieve its ambitious targets. 

 

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is commercially available and in use 

In the US and Europe, Neste’s sustainable aviation fuel annual capacity is currently 100,000 tons. With the Singapore refinery expansion on the way, Neste will have the capacity to produce over 1 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel by 2022.

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is already available and used in the market. For example, we have partnered with Air BP to deliver sustainable aviation fuel to customers in Sweden and France. In addition, Lufthansa uses our renewable product, blended with fossil jet fuel, continuously on flights departing from Frankfurt.

Cooperation is key in decarbonizing aviation

Industry cooperation and partnerships are needed to bring new solutions to the market and to ensure fast growth in the use of sustainable aviation fuels. We work together with our partners to develop innovative business models and funding concepts to enable wider use of renewable aviation fuel use, while regulatory frameworks to accelerate growth in sustainable aviation fuels are being defined. Product availability is no longer a constraint for growing use of sustainable aviation fuels, considering investments being made by Neste and others.

What is Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel?

Up to 80% smaller carbon footprint compared to fossil jet fuel

The fuel has a smaller environmental footprint compared to fossil fuels. Over the lifecycle, including the impact of production and logistics, Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel can achieve up to 80% reduction in GHG emissions compared to fossil jet fuel.

100% renewable waste and residue raw materials

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel, is a sustainable aviation fuel, produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials. The raw material we use for the production of the fuel include e.g. used cooking oil and animal waste fat. 

Significantly reduced local emissions 

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel will significantly reduce local emissions. The fuel can reduce harmful particulate SOx and NOx emissions and it burns clean – free of sulphur, oxygen and aromatics – with higher energy content.

Quality requirements

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is chemically identical to conventional jet fuel. The fuel complies with the strict safety and quality requirements of the aviation sector and is certified under ASTM D7566. 

Easy to use 100% drop-in fuel

The fuel is 100% compatible with the existing jet engine technology and fuel distribution infrastructure when blended with fossil jet (D1655). Therefore, no additional investments or modifications are needed. The fuel in neat form is ASTM (D7566) approved. When blended with conventional fossil jet fuel up to a maximum level of 50%, the fuel is re-certified as D1655.

Excellent performance

With a high cetane number of 75 and above, Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel ensures an efficient and clean combustion. It has higher energy content compared to conventional fossil jet fuel. Lufthansa-test proved the excellent performance of Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel. 1,500 tons less CO2-emissions and 1% lower fuel consumption compared to conventional fossil jet fuel. The aircraft and engines performed excellently and the condition of the combustion chambers, turbines, and fuel systems of the engines has been exemplary both during and at the end of the trials. The aircraft's fuel tanks remained free of any damage or corrosion, and the fuel was of excellent quality even after a long-term storage.

Excellent storage properties

Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is a pure hydrocarbon and can therefore be stored over long periods of time without deterioration in quality or water accumulation. 

Superior cold weather performance

With freeze point of -47°C and lower, Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is suitable for operation in extreme cold weather conditions.

Commercially used

Today Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel is in commercial use in the market and the production volumes are being scaled up. Together with Air BP Neste has collaborated on supplying sustainable aviation fuel in the Swedish market and Caen airport in France. The fuel is also supplied to Lufthansa, and it is in continuous use in Frankfurt airport. 

Neste serves the aviation industry with a range of high quality jet fuel products. Neste’s product portfolio includes Jet A1 kerosene that is supplied to Helsinki Airport and Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel. Both fuels comply with the quality requirements and standards of the ASTM certification.
