Neste MY Renewable Jet complies with the strict safety and quality requirements of the aviation sector. Because of its fossil fuel like chemical composition and excellent cold weather performance, Neste MY Renewable Jet can be blended with fossil jet fuel.
Impressive tests with Neste Winter Grade Renewable Fuel
The airplane manufacturer Boeing has successfully tested Neste's Winter Grade Renewable Fuel as a component of aviation fuel. The testing took place in the U.S. using a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. 15% of the fuel used in one of the plane's two engines was Neste Winter Grade Renewable fuel. The airplane performed as designed with the renewable fuel blend, just as it does with fossil jet fuel.
Neste Winter Grade Renewable Fuel is currently waiting for ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) approval for use as an aviation fuel.
Specially produced Neste MY Renewable Jet commercially tested
Specially manufactured Neste MY Renewable Jet has also been tested on 1,187 scheduled Lufthansa flights between Frankfurt and Hamburg in 2011, and one intercontinental flight between Frankfurt and Washington D.C. at the beginning of 2012. Fuel quality, aircraft performance, engine status, and fuel storability were systematically studied during the flights by the pilots and cabin staff of the aircraft, as well as ground-based maintenance personnel.
Excellent engine performance
The Lufthansa test showed that Neste MY Renewable Jet reduced CO2 emissions by a total of 1,500 tons for the flights concerned, and that the fuel consumption was 1% lower overall compared to fossil jet fuel. The data from the trial also confirmed that the aircraft and their engines performed excellently. The condition of the combustion chambers, turbines, and fuel systems of the engines has been exemplary both during and at the end of the trials. No sign of damage or corrosion has been detected in the aircraft fuel tanks, and longer-term storage has had no negative impact on fuel quality.
Promoting biofuel target for the aviation sector
Neste supports the 2011 established European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath target to increase the use of biofuels in aviation by 2020. The original goal of the project is to increase airlines’ annual usage of biofuels to 2 million t/a by 2020, ensure that aviation biofuels are produced sustainably, and that they are technically suitable for commercial use.
Neste also joined the EU-funded Initiative Towards sustAinable Kerosene for Aviation (ITAKA) project in 2012, which was launched to support the development of aviation biofuels in an economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable manner, improving the readiness of existing technology and infrastructures. The collaborative project in the EU to achieve these goals is the first of its kind and will develop a full value-chain to produce sustainable drop-in fuel on a large scale. Neste is part of an international consortium working to promote the project’s goals and will produce renewable jet fuel (Neste MY Renewable Jet) for use during the four year initiative.
In 2013, a BioPort Holland sustainable jet biofuel supply chain initiative was set up. SkyNRG signed a Letter of Intent with the Dutch government, KLM, Neste, Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam to scale up production of sustainable renewable jet fuels in the Netherlands at Neste's Neste Renewable Diesel plant in Rotterdam.
